Garoto (Muito) Esperto: Lord Horatio Nelson
Nascido a 29 de setembor de 1758 em Burham Thorpe, Norpholk, na Inglaterra, Horácio Nelson foi o maior herói naval inglês. Tendo ingressado na marinha britânica aos 12 anos de idade como aspirante de marinha, foi um oficial de rápida ascensão, que comandou sua primeira embarcação aos 20 anos e se tornou capitão aos 21.
Como capitão, Nelson foi criticado e aplaudido por suas táticas agressivas e não ortodoxas. Em 1794, servindo no navio Agamemnon em capanha no Mediterrâneo e em Córsega, perdeu o olho direito em uma batalha. Já em 1797, Nelson perdeu o braço direito. Entretanto no mesmo ano foi condecorado cavaleiro. Em 1799, ele começou um caso amoroso coma Lady Emma Hamilton, que seria sua futura esposa e mãe de sua filha, e em 1801 tornou-se visconde.
Com o fim da Revolução Francesa, Nelson passou a combater o crescente Império Napoleônico e a ameaça que este representava para a Inglaterra. Como Comandante-Em-Chefe do Mediterrâneo, o Vice-Almirante, em sua Nau Capitânia Victory, tornou-se um perigo para os Franceses. Nesse contexto uma cilada foi tramada contra Nelson, que resultou na Batalha de Trafalgar em 21 de outubro de 1805.
A 21 milhas do Cabo Trafalgar, no dia supracitado, a frota inglesa encontrou uma frota conjunta francesa e espanhola comandada pelo Almirante Pierre de Villeneuve. Iniciada a batalha Nelson deu ordens para que a frota inglesa se dividisse em duas filas e quebrasse a linha franco-espanhola. Tal manobra, inédita na história da guerra ficou conhecida como O Toque de Nelson. Ao final do dia, a frota inglesa havia afundado um navio inimigo e capturado outros dezesete. A Batalha de Trafalgar é considerada a maior vitória naval inglesa e o início de sua hegemonia mundial. Entretanto, durante a batalha, Nelson levou um tiro de mosquete e teve um ferimento mortal.

Grammy 2003. No meio da premiação ocorre a tradicional homenagem aos múscios falecidos no último ano. Grandes nomes a serem lembrados: o incomparável Dee Dee Ramone e o inigualável John Entwistle entre eles. O tributo acaba com uma imagem de Joe Strummer, nesse momento a tela de projeção abaixa e no palco uma "banda" começa a tocar London Calling. A banda é formada por ninguém menos que Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Steve Van Zandt (E Street Band), Tony Kanal (No Doubt) e Adrian Young (No Doubt). O público ovaciona.
Joe Strummer foi vocalista e guitarrista do The Clash e morreu no fim de dezembro, quando teve um ataque cardiáco.
Essa homenagem foi definitivamente a cena mais bonita do evento. Praticamente trouxe lágrimas aos olhos de dois fans que assistiam o evento enquanto conversavam pela internet.
Rest In Peace, Strummer.

Garoto Esperto: Garth Ennis
Garth Ennis figura entre os melhores escritores de quadrinhos da atualidade. Ele também é, sem erro, o mais polemico deles. Seu texto é corrosivo e crítico, marcado pela violência e pelo humor negro.
Nascido na Irlanda do Norte em 16 de janeiro de 1970, Ennis largou a faculdade por acreditar que lá não aprendia nada de útil e voltou-se ao mercado de quadrinhos no fim da década de 80, tomando parte na "invasão britânica"
Seus primeiros trabalhos foram em revistas britânicas como Crisis, 2000 AD e Judge Dredd. Suas histórias violentas o levaram a assumir em 1991 o título da DC ComicsJohn Constantine - Hellblazer. Foi na DC Comics que sua carreira ascendeu. Lá ele escreveu os roteiros da revista The Demon, onde apresentou o assassino profissional Tommy Monaghan, personagem de sua criação (juntamente com o artista John McCrea) que estrelaria sua própria revista Hitman em 1996. Também em 1996, Ennis inicioua publicar seu maior sucesso, a revista Preacher, já encerrada. Preacher narra a busca do pastor Jesse Custer por Deus.
Atualmente, Ennis é responsável pelo ótimo título The Punisher, publicado pela Marvel Comics.

Incompatibilidade
Foi de repente que me deparei a pensar sobre o filme Falcão Negro Em Perigo (Black Hawk Down). Há algo de estranho em seu título original se comparado ao da versão nacional, não?
Nos meus conhecimentos sobre a língua inglesa sempre acreditei que hawk era gavião, e que falcão era falcon, e que portanto a tradução do título estava descaradamente errada. Afinal de contas as diferenças entre falcões e gaviões são gritantes.
Entretanto, para não me passar da bobo na frente dessa multidão de três leitores desse blog resolvi consultar um dicionário. Eis o que descobri. Segundo o Novo Dicionário Folha Webster's Português/Inglês Inglês/Português, a tradução de hawk é falcão (o que tornaria o título em português do filme correto e esse blogueiro um idiota). Mas o mesmo dicionário afirma que a tradução de falcão para o inglês é unica e exclusivamente falcon (o que tornaria o título do filme em português errado e esse blogueiro um paranoico por traduções).
Seriam falcões os mesmos animais que gaviões?

Back To The Big City
Post atípico. Vou falar dos meus últimos dias. Whatever.
Muito bem, passei os meus últimos dias de férias no Rio de Janeiro. Gente legal, cidade bonita, boa companhia e cerveja. Além de alimentos indigestos, essa pequena viagem teve seus momentos. Ouvir a rádio Espantoso enquanto roubava carros, negociar jogos de videogame, esperar pelo meu RG, jogar Galaga, ir a lugares onde a música tocando é boa, etc...
Talvez esteja exagerando um pouco, mas eu me diverti como se não houvesse amanhã.
P.S.: GTA Vice City é algo de outro mundo (os anos 80, heheh)
P.S.2: Gostaria de chamar a atenção para o Beastie Boys Anthology: The Sounds of Science, os discos são muito bons, além de serem muito bem trabalhados artísticamente: os encartes são muito fodas.
P.S.3: Esse post vai para o Joe Floco-de-Neve, a Sra. Joe Floco-de-Neve, as Janes todas (principalmente a Jane Saia-Nova), os Joes do Rio. Para os outros Joes fica o aviso de que eu estou de volta (como se isso fosse essencialmente importante....)

Gartoto Esperto: Brian Setzer
Brian Setzer é nativo de Nova York. Ele nasceu no dia 10 de Abril do ano de 1959. Na sua adolescência, Setzer matava aulas e pegava o trem para assistir shows da jazz na cidade. Durante essa parte de sua vida ele aprendeu a tocar o instrumento que o consagraria: a guitarra.
Em 1979, Brian se juntou com seus colegas de escola Lee Rocker (contrabaixo) e Slim Jim Phantom (bateria) para formar os Stray Cats. Tocando roackabilly fora de época, os Stray Cats, ainda em 79, gravam o single Runaway Boys e em 1980 mudaram-se para a Inglaterra. Na década de 80 a banda começa a fazer sucesso, gravando músicas como Rock This Town (que como Runaway Boys atingiu o nono lugar nas paradas britanicas) e o clássico Stray Cat Strut. Em 1984 os Stray Cats se separam devido a brigas internas e Brian parte em carreira solo.
No ano da separação, Setzer toca com os Honeydrippers (banda de Robert Plant) no programa Saturday Night Live. Enquanto lançava álbns solo o garoto esperto participou em 1987 do filme La Bamba, interpretando Eddie Cochram. Em 1989 os Stray Cats se reuniram. A banda lançou três discos e se separou em 1993.
Com o fim dos Stray Cats, Setzer realiza um sonho e une sua guitarra a uma big band, formando a Brian Setzer Orchestra (BSO) e revitalizando o swing. A orchestra ganhou três Grammys (dois de melhor música instrumental por Sleepwalk e Caravan, e um de melhor harmonia vocal por Jump Jive 'An Wail). A Brian Setzer Orchestra ainda está na ativa, lotando shows e gravando seu sexto álbum.
Além disso, em 2001 Brian Setzer se juntou com Mark Winchester e Bernie Dresel (baixista e baterista da BSO, respectivamente) e formou o Brian Setzer '68 Comeback Special. Com essa banda voltou ao rockabilly e lançou um álbum: Ignition.
Atualmente, Setzer toca na BSO e no Brian Setzer Trio (continuação do Comeback Special). Ele definitivamente figura entre os guitarristas mais relevantes do rock'n'roll.
